Elizabeth A. “Betty” Curley (nee Delargey), 94, October 27, 1929 to March 8, 2024; passed away peacefully at Plush Mills Senior Living in Swarthmore PA. Formerly of South Philadelphia, Betty was the loving daughter of the late Patrick and Nora (nee McCarthy) Delargey. Preceded in death by her loving husband John J. “Spike” Curley; siblings John Delargey (Marie), Nora Schneider (Charles), and Mary Powell (Kenneth); beloved mother of her four sons John, Michael, James and Thomas; devoted grandmother of Christopher, Rachel, and Aileen and great-grandmother of Stella, Graham and Julia who affectionately called her ‘Great Bet’. Beloved by her daughters-in-law Mary Ellen, Maureen, Ilsabe, Gunilla, Debra and the late Anne. She was the loving aunt and great-aunt of many nieces and nephews, their children and families, and lifelong devoted friend of Jane (nee Devaney) Sweeney and the late Marie (nee Ryan) Casey.
Graduating with honors in 1947 from John J. Hallahan R.C. High School and remaining active in their Alumni Association, she worked for the law firms of Mullaney and Quinn; Gilfillan, Gilpin and Brehman, followed by a 28-year career at Philadelphia City Hall as a secretary in the First Judicial District of the City of Philadelphia Courts System, retiring at the age of 78. For many years she was an officer and President of the Mother’s Club at Bishop Neumann High School organizing numerous trips and activities for parents and staff at the school. A passionate supporter of the Walnut St. Theatre, for many years she arranged for season tickets for a group of friends to attend theatrical presentations. She was a loyal and generous member of St. Gabriel’s R.C. Parish in the Grays Ferry neighborhood of South Philadelphia and deeply proud of her Irish Heritage which she celebrated with enthusiasm. She’s remembered fondly by family and friends for initiating the singing of ‘the old songs’ at parties and performing what people affectionally dubbed ‘The Betty Dance.’ Betty was known for her generosity, especially to her family when she was a gracious host to all of them for annual family vacations in Wildwood, NJ. Her willingness to lend a hand to those in need or going through tough times was well known, though she never mentioned it. Always meticulously dressed in up-to-date fashions, and known for her wit, mastery of crossword puzzles and sharp memory, Betty will be missed by all who were blessed to know her.
